The rope, after the list closes
A composite of West Hollywood corridors after midnight. Not one door. Not one name.
Illustrative desk copy. A composite, not a reported night. No sentence in this piece is a quotation.
By Anthony Perlas
The interesting hour is not the arrival. Arrival is logistics: a pause, a name if there is a name, the small theater of who is already inside. The hour that teaches the room is the one after the list has done its work and the sidewalk has become its own city. People stop performing the entrance and start negotiating the night they actually have.
You can read a block by the shoes. Dinner still has a polish the pavement has not taken. Somewhere else has already spent the shine. Neither is a moral category. It is information, and anyone working a door with any craft already used it an hour ago. The rest of us are late to a sentence that was written in posture.
